Professional chef teaches life skills at Clannad

Professional chef, Warren Hoile, provided some of his time free of charge to support the staff and children at Clannad to make an unhealthy meal they like, healthy. During the session, the children and staff team were taught how to make chicken kebab, and a vegan alternative, and called it the “Clannad Cool Caribbean Chicken Kebab”.

Within our residential homes, promoting healthy and nutritious meals is a key part of our ethos, as is encouraging life skills such as cooking. Our staff teams are keen to create healthy dishes based on the children’s likes, and providing them with alternatives, or introducing them to new foods. This provides the children with a choice, and the opportunity to say “I like it” or “I don’t like it”.

All of the children loved the chicken – but one disliked the cabbage, cucumber, onions and pitta bread, and the others disliked the sour cream and onions, Apart from that, everyone else loved all the parts of the meal!

The opportunity also gave the children the opportunity to learn about budgeting, with the recipe feeding eight people at a cost of £1.10 per person.

The recipe can also be tried at home and found here!
