Tell us about your career to date with Five Rivers.
I began working for Five Rivers in January 2013. I initially worked as a Fostering Support Worker. Alongside my role, I was supported by Five Rivers to do a BA Honours in Social Work at the Open University and qualified as a Social Worker in 2018. I continued to work full-time but was given a study day each week. Five Rivers continued to pay me whilst I went on my first placement, and then I completed my final placement with Five Rivers, and with the team’s encouragement, we agreed that I would progress into the role of Supervising Social Worker upon qualifying.
What drew you to the Five Rivers community, and what excites you most about our mission?
I was drawn to Five Rivers because of the commitment to transforming children’s lives, fostering resilience, and creating new pathways. Having previously worked in a residential children’s home, I understand the unique challenges these children encounter and the importance of providing them with a nurturing environment.
What do you enjoy most about working at Five Rivers?
I enjoy having the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the children and families. Witnessing the children transform as they thrive in a caring environment is incredibly rewarding.
It is inspiring to see how these relationships develop and how, with the right support, children can flourish.
I am also impressed by the level of commitment demonstrated by our Foster Carers, their dedication and passion for nurturing the children. Being part of such a supportive team amplifies this experience, as we collaborate and share insights to enhance the care we provide.
Is there an experience during your time at Five Rivers that has stayed with you or shaped your journey?
In 2022, I was fortunate to take a three-month sabbatical in Sri Lanka. I volunteered for The Rosie May Foundation, which works to educate and empower vulnerable families, unlock potential, promote gender equality, and create change for future generations. It was an incredible experience, and I am very grateful that I was able to take the time off to do this.
I feel very grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to grow both personally and professionally. My journey from Fostering Support Worker to Senior Practitioner has been shaped by the supportive environment, the inspiring Foster Carers, and the incredible children and families I’ve had the privilege to work with.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about a career in social work?
A career in social work can be incredibly fulfilling, offering both challenges and rewards. No two days are the same. I have enjoyed building meaningful relationships with foster families and the children living with them, supporting them in navigating complex issues and being part of positive change. There are emotional highs and lows, often dealing with difficult situations. The support from the team I work with has been invaluable, and I have found opportunities for personal and professional growth.
