Fostering in your 20s and 30s

Woman fostering in her 20s

While many might think fostering is only for older adults, younger people can make excellent Foster Carers. Key requirements include maturity, stability, commitment, and having a spare room in your home.

Can you foster in your 20s?

Yes! The youngest age you can foster in the UK is 21. Although many people picture Foster Carers as older adults with grown children, more and more young people in their 20s are stepping up to provide safe and loving homes for children in need.

The difference you can make as a young Foster Carer is immeasurable—not only for the children you welcome into your home, but for your own personal growth and professional development.

Why foster in your 20s or 30s?

  • Create a lasting impact early on

Fostering at a young age allows you to build a legacy of care, empathy, and positive influence from a young age. The lessons you learn from fostering will stay with you forever.

  • Professional and personal growth

Fostering isn’t just about giving—it’s also about gaining. You will acquire skills that are invaluable in all areas of life, from communication and resilience to conflict resolution and leadership. These qualities are transferable to your career and personal relationships, making you a more rounded individual.

  • Fresh perspectives and relatability

As a younger Foster Carer, you may find it easier to relate to the young people you look after. You can connect with them in a unique way and provide a perspective that they might find more relatable. This connection can be crucial in making children feel understood and accepted.

  • Energy, interests and enthusiasm

Younger Foster Carers often have the energy required to look after active children, whether it’s running around the playground or taking them to sports clubs. You may also be up-to-date with the latest technology and trends, which children may appreciate.

Can I foster in a rented house?

Many of our younger Foster Carers ask us if it’s possible to foster in a rental property. The answer is yes, you can foster in a rented house. As long as your rental agreement/landlord agrees to you fostering, renting is not a problem. What we need to know is that you have a secure, safe, and suitable home environment.
