World Earth Day Competition Winner & Launch of Our Environmental Action Group
On Friday (22 April) it was World Earth Day, an annual event that shines a light on the environmental problems we’re facing.
As a social enterprise, we track our own environmental impact and are committed to making the world a better place for our children, which is why we’re pleased to announce the launch of our Environmental Action Group and the winners of the first Five Rivers World Earth Day Competition.
Following on from the success of our Five Rivers Environmental Action Week in October, we wanted to continue our good work throughout the year and decided to set up an Environmental Action Group, led by Fostering Support Worker, Bethany Burnett, and the Communications Team. The Environmental Action Group aims to provide our children and young people with engaging and educational activities that will teach them why it’s important to look after our environment and give them tips on how they can reduce their environmental impact now and in the future.
We launched our first activity, a competition for World Earth Day, earlier this month ahead of the Easter holidays and encouraged our children to create some artwork or a sculpture using recyclable materials. This activity aimed to teach them what materials around the house can be recycled.
We had a great response and received a total of 26 entries from children and young people aged 18 months to 18 years, with a little help from our foster carers and fostering support workers, as well as a lovely entry from one of our colleagues.
The winner and two runners-up were selected by our chosen judge, Five Rivers’ Environmental Officer, David Baker-Price.
The winner of the competition will receive a goody bag full of environmentally friendly products, with the runners-up also receiving prizes. Everyone that entered will receive a certificate and an ‘Eco Warrior’ badge for participating.
We’re thrilled to announce the winner of this year’s World Earth Day competition:
