Children Who Foster: Meet Evvy
Monday 13 October 2025
Kiera-Lee Friendship is Five Rivers Fostering Support Worker who recently supported Evvy, one of our “children who foster” to create a video based on her fostering experience. Evvy’s family are a dedicated and resilient family who have helped young people who struggled living within family settings.
Evvy wanted to create a film to help other children like her who may have been struggling with fostering – she wrote the script and created the materials used in the film. In creating the script, they began by noting down the main points Evvy wanted to discuss in her film, they also imagined the things she would have liked to hear when her family first started fostering.
Kiera supported Evvy throughout the process of making her film, each session they worked on the project, finalising the script, creating the characters, recording the script, and eventually filming. She felt more comfortable thinking of the character in the film as someone else, once she adapted that mindset, she began opening up more. Kiera used this opportunity to explore topics she knew were tricky, which led to Evvy becoming more animated, excited, and emotionally lighter after each session.
“I hope this video shows it is okay to have moments where they may struggle with fostering but also show that they are not alone and these feelings are normal and valid! This video should also demonstrate how there is support for both their children who foster and children in care.” – Kiera-Lee Friendship, Support Worker
As they worked on the film, Evvy’s care experienced young person moved away which brought up a lot of mixed feelings for her. Kiera helped her work through those feelings using the project – this led them to adding a section on how it feels when a child moves from the family home and what to expect.
At the end of this project, Kiera noted how important this project was and that there was a need for more projects and general work with children who foster. Kiera grew up in a fostering family and felt firsthand the lack of support that was available. She remembered asking for more training and support in her family’s annual reviews, but nothing changed – so now she fights to ensure foster children get the help they need. This could be in the form of projects, training, or general support sessions.
Evvy created this film to help children who foster understand what to expect and help others understood how difficult behaviour by care experienced young people can reflect deeper struggles.
